Question:

Entry to Ireland?

This is a bit of a what if question...

I am South African, and so is my husband. He is also Irish by descent (both parents born in Ireland). My daughter was born in Japan and has both South African and Irish citizenship. If something were to happen to my husband, and for some reason I was unwilling to return to South Africa, would I be allowed to live in Ireland on the strength of my daughter being a citizen? Or would I have to go through the usual routes of getting a work visa etc?

Thanks. :)

  1. Not any more, you could be deported. It's a law set up to stop sham marriges as a way of getting into the country. If you live here for 5 years you can get a passport.

  2. hi you

as far as i know that due to your husband parents been Irish and your daughter holding Irish citizenship this would entitle you to live in Ireland if anything should happen your husband i am not to sure if you would need a work visa to work here or not but we have a saying never put off till tomorrow what you can do today check it out and if you do need work visa now is the time to be looking for it

  3. I think the fact that your husband is Irish by virtue of his parents is sufficient for you to live in Ireland, and your daughter's citizenship supports that.

I guess you are living in Ireland now, so surely this is something that you should make clear before anything happened to your husband. Speak to immigration to find out your options, maybe you qualify for citizenship.

If you are not currently in Ireland, there may be an Irish Embassy near you, or make on-line enquiries to get things going.

  4. No, I don't believe having a child with Irish passport is sufficient grounds for residency in Ireland, thousands of immigrants in Ireland with Irish born children entitled to citizenship are at risk of deportation at the moment.

Speak to your nearest Irish Embassy, they should be able to tell what the situation is & you should also investigate obtaining Irish citizenship through your spouse.
