  1. There are very few true environmentalists left.  Green peace and other similar organizations were taken over by a bunch of capitalist-hating kooks who don't care about the environment at all as long as they can bring down our economy.

That way they can complain that we depend too much on foreign oil while stopping us from drilling and refining our own. Cute trick.

We let them get too powerful and it's crippling the world economy.

  2. I suspect that if we did not use wood for lumber we might have far fewer forests. But well beyond that consideration, when we put wood inside a house we expect it to sequester carbon there for close to a couple centuries. Meanwhile the forest will be growing a new crop of trees, several times over.

If by contrast those trees were left in the forest to die and rot, they would have been gone from the forest only a bit later, meanwhile their release of carbon would be much earlier. It would start immediately they fall down, and it would be very fast if the trees should be part of a forest fire.

So I can live with planned harvest of trees for lumber for houses.

  3. The purest environmentalist would not live in a house, use electricity, drive a car, or participate in any consumption of resources.

We call these true environmentalists the homeless.  Unfortunately, these people also depend on the charity of the people in cars, using fossil fuels, that give them change at intersections so they can buy alcohol or drugs that requires fossil fuels for their transportation.

If you use toothpaste to brush your teeth and prevent gum decay, you are a hypocrite.

  4. Well, that depends on your definition of "protecting forests". It doesn't neccessarily have to mean not using wood products (which would be rather difficult anyway).

Protecting forests is generally about sustainability - that is, for every tree that is felled for logging, another one is planted to replace it. It can also mean avoiding tree felling in areas that are particularly diverse in wildlife, or are host to a rare or endangered species.

So, in short, you can live in a wooden house and be interested in protecting forests without being a hypocrite.

  5. A true environmentalist would use natures' bounty to it's best advantage and would ensure re-planting replacement trees.

A non environmentalist might burn the forest to the ground, then complain that there is a shortage of lumber. When the rainy season washes the hill away because there are no tree roots to hold the soil, they complain because somebody else didn't plan very well. When their house washes away in the flood, it was the developer's fault. Somehow ... they would blame the environmentalists ... or somebody ... anybody else. Hypocrites come in all flavors.
