Environment Agency completes work at Olympic Park for London 2012 Olympic Games
The Environment Agency of the United Kingdom announced on February 6 that Olympic site has been cleaned up completely.
The completion of the work has made the Olympic Park and the area surrounding it the biggest urban park that is present in Europe.
When the bid for the London 2012 Olympic Games was made, the leaders of the bid highlighted the fact that the Olympic Games which would be held in London would be the greenest one the world has yet seen. As a result, the area surrounding the Olympic Park
that consisted of polluted regions had to be revived.
The restoration work that was carried out in order to make the Olympic Park and its vicinity the largest urban park in Europe was of an immense nature as it comprised of an area equivalent to 297 football pitches put together. Not only was the huge area
cleaned up, wetland plants that totalled to be 300,000 in number as well as 2,000 trees that are native to the locality were planted in the region.
Not only that, several lizards, toads and insects have been released in the area so that the natural eco system of the locality is maintained. While the area has been given a boost in the natural organisms that it consisted of, the species that were harmful
to it have been removed. This has been specifically done on the region of the River Lea.
The River Lea no longer has the Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and floating pennywort, all of which were harmful to the locality. Not only that, the artificial landscape present has also been improved by removing the concrete walls that were acting
as eyesores. Now the pedestrians have a wider as well as greener view.
The chairman of the Environment Agency, Lord Chris Smith, expressed himself on the matter in the following words, “The Olympic Park has shown the way in securing major environmental improvement at the same time as enabling large-scale construction and development.
The Environment Agency has worked closely with the ODA on issues such as improving water quality, restoring habitats and reducing flood risk.”
