OK, i need to get this straight, is this TRUE that in 10 years time the UK will be poor like Africa because there isn't enough food and not enough recycling and electricity? honest answers please! I asked this for a reason XD

I don't think any change that dramatic can happen in that short of time. However there are some people saying there are some changes that can dramatically affect the economies of developed nations and it will depend on how they react to them that will determine how they will affect individuals and communities.

I'm refering to the worlds demand for food and the ability to produce it. China is changing at an alarming rate as well as other developing countries. In China it is estimated that 15 million people annually are leaving rural areas and moving to cities. This puts a drain on world food sources, as people are no longer growing their own food, they are purchasing them from grocery stores.

I've heard the likely result of this growth is the cost of food increasing due to increased competition on the world market. In the US we rely heavily on Central and South America for produce. If demand increases we will be paying more and eventually there may be a shortage.

There is a way to combat this problem. It's easy cheap and better for you. Support your local agriculture. There was a time not long ago when most of our food traveled less than 100 miles to get to our plate. The more we support our local farmers and rancher the more they will increase their production and the less your local community will feel the shift in food price changes or any potential shortages.

If you think I'm insane, just take rice as an example. When there was a shortage India kept what they had and wouldn't export any. It is only logical that if there is a shortage of anything the country that produces it will keep it for themselves first and sell to the highest bidder what they can spare.

Set yourself up to live a more sustainable life and you should be fine.

Probably not "poor like Africa"

Much of Africa is very rich, but due to expropriation of resources and control of the comodity markets and trade restrictions by the North, indebtedness to the North and the impact of pollution (including climate change) mostly generated by the North

What will happen when the effects of oil, water, fertiliser, topsoil, shortage, runaway climate change, and unsustainable population growth really bite ?

Well we might, just might, turn from the industrial growth society to a sustainable community, but if not, then African societies from San to Timbucto have history on their side, they have oil and diamonds, rivers and wide grazing lands ... they didn't have to go out looking to conquer the world to support themselves
