today computer science is every where and is used in environmental projects like measuring temp etc on global level, but can a software help saving environment any ways?..i am a computer science guy and working in this project, need more and more ideas so that ,can implement a better software (using .net technology)..please suggest some....an idea which is feasible for a group of students to implement...thanks :)

  1. I think we've already discovered some great ways to integrate a number of software programs together to help produce a variety of very successful environmentally driven projects.

I think National Geographic's "Critter Cam" is a great example (see first link below).  This has brought together -- at least on the software level -- GPS tracking, advanced imagining methods, motion sensor technology, etc.

The result is they've gotten some great insights into what is going on in the world of sharks, what lions do when we're not around, and even how melting ice shelves are impacting polar bears.

A DC based non profit forestry group is using GPS and GIS software to determine how rapidly our urban areas have become deforested and what we can do to "re-green" our cities.  This could provide significant benefits to places like Atlanta that are dealing with air quality issues, storm water runoff contamination, soaring energy costs, and even a drop in quality of life.

Hope that gives you a few ideas to work from.

  2. software can also be used to change the power settings on a network of PCs.  Think of any large organization with 1000's of PCs, a lot which are usually running without anyone directly using them for hours at a time.  You could make a hack to push out when these machines log in to set their power settings (turn of monitor after XX minutes, etc. ) to a shorter time.  This would cut down on power consumption.

I'll give you another hint - you can use the Windows command "powercfg" from a command prompt to get this to work.

    good luck!

  3. Ensembling software for conservation would seem to be severely audacious. However, I think that it would be still more audacious not to. Computer programs that rescue animals in danger, such as when a fire occurs and alerts the conservationists, they can save the animals. Going on, maybe there can segment the animals into subjections and then supply them with their natural habitats such as ecological relevent lifeforms. Quite strange, that no one has thought to use computer science to give animals a survival chance by systematicly making their habitats on the Internet or other networks.

  4. Absolutely you can make the biggest difference and in more ways than one.

Infrared technology is a wonderful technology that allows you to see temperature beyond our visible spectrum. It hasn't been utilized in mainstream curriculum because of lack of interpretation to the degree that would satisfy education.

There are lots of kinds of equipment except you need an application to go with the equipment, otherwise the application exceeds expertise.

I started working with this technology when it became portable and at the time it was expensive to produce the images as well as the technology was cooled with liquid nitrogen. Once you ran out of liquid nitrogen, that was the end of the imaging.

28 years later the technology is portable and digital while being electrically cooled. Imaging electronically is incredible for analysis and presentation. If an image is no good, it can be deleted.

Temperature literally pertains to everything in existence except we consider temperatures in a calculator in universities or tech schools. Imagine the whole world is arguing about global warming because the temperatures are calculated, we are blind.

Go to http://www.thermoguy.com/globalwarming-h... and take your time looking at advanced thermography with the required interpretation for curriculum.

Amazing to think of the whole world in Bali at the UN Meeting and none of them have ever seen the temperature images at that site. They are doing the best they can in a calculator.

Take a brief look and think of how you can reach the world, educate the world electronically to really impact lives. These environmental issues are health related and the Gates Foundation is helping many people in the world.

At the link you will see how cancer can be seen. To see or not to see, that is the question. We can make an environmental difference locally, people are looking for objective data so they can help.

Look at the forest fire files and see what California missed because a limited imaging application was taken forward.

  5. Absolutely. Software can already help reduce the number of documents we produce, saving paper.

    · merge & print multiple jobs together

    · easily preview print jobs and eliminate unwanted pages on the fly

    · scale larger paper on standard paper

    · print multiple pages on a single page

    · do double sided (duplex) pages

We could easily save more than 50% of the paper and toner not to mention storage space. All of the above and more is possible.
