  1. I work in the transportation field as an environmental scientist.  We document compliance with NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act); obtain federal, state, and local environmental permits; and manage the remediation of contaminated sites.  All of this is related to the design, construction, and maintenance of state highways.

    As environmental regulations are increasing there will be an increasing number of job opportunities in the fields of regulation and compliance.  Most regulatory jobs will be with some level of government.  Everyone has to comply with environmental laws, so compliance jobs will be found all across the public/private sectors.  

    Other areas employing environmental scientists are parks, environmental advocacy groups, research, waste disposal, water/sewage treatment, public works departments, land management, health and safety specialists, food safety, and real estate.
