in chinese, the word closest to 'crisis' is made of the two words 'danger' and 'opportunity'.

we english speakers are missing out on this second bit, and just concentrating on the scary danger.

what opportunities can you see arising from the current environmental crisis?

  1. There are so many potential opportunities in addressing global warming.

Transitioning to clean renewable energy (improving air quality and public health), reducing our dependence on foreign oil (fewer political and military conflicts), creating green collar jobs (benefitting the economy), etc.  It's definitely as much of an opportunity as a danger.  It's also interesting that the more we take advantage of the opportunity, the lesser the danger.

  2. More effort will be putting in by the big nations in search for another Earth alike planet for our future generation to live on.

    Just my 2 cents really...

  3. We have the opportunity to change our whole cultural ethic from unbridled expansionism to a wholistic view of humans and the natural world. By doing so, we would step into the ecstasy that the mystic or the naturalist has always enjoyed, and we would step out of the limiting selfishness that our materialism creates. This would go far in healing the emptiness of our consumer culture.

  4. We already see new jobs in clean and renewable energy. I purchase much of my products from cleaning supplies, beauty products and clothing from smaller start ups that are more environmentally freindly. I buy most of my produce and protiens from local farmers, so I'm helping my local economy instead of some distant foreign farm or large corporation.

  5. The greatest danger our environment faces comes from the exponential increase in the human population.

    1900 1.5 BN

    1960 3.0 Bn

    2000 6.0 Bn

    2006 6.7 Bn

Focusing all our attention on carbon emissions is distracting us from tackling the real problem.

  6. The opportunists are those that push the hoax the most.

For example, Al Gore has made 100 million by lying and deceiving people.  He even got a Nobel "Peace" prize for advancements in socialism.

Politicians and governments will have lots of opportunities to take away more freedoms and hike up taxes even more if they can get enough ignorant people to believe they are causing global warming.

So by creating imaginary danger they will get enormous opportunities.
