Question:

Environmentally, should we still distribute local papers, especially those wrapped in plastic?

I notice on my runs around the area, that local papers are quite often left on the driveway, unread. On rainy days, the local papers (2 per household, once a week) are wrapped in plastic bags. Surely it is time to re-think the local paper. Alot of people can access the paper on the internet. For those who can't perhaps newspapers can be given to the newsagencies for free distribution, or a person can register if they want it. It seems such a waste of paper. It is also a waste of plastic that is going to land fill areas.

  1. Newspaper subscription should just be online with maybe the exception of restaurants and stuff like they should still be for sale but people should be encouraged to not get the paper delivered.

  2. write a letter to the editor to your local liberal rag and see if they publish it. Good luck!

  3. No! We should not distribute local papers, and internet news should be improved and remain free to all.

So much talk about recycling and yet we are still distributing papers is such a contradiction.

I agree news can be accessed from the internet but this is only for developed countries and people who have the mean to own a computer or lab-top.

The thin plastic that come with it often flies off if not careful and go into the sea, where marine life is endangered. A marine life conservationist once told me that some sea creatures mistaken these plastic bags as jelly-fish, which is their food, and consume them and die!

  4. I agree with you.

  5. i agree with your idea. at where i live, we have to subscribe to get our paper delivered and usually it is delivered to the door. my neighbour dont suscribe so they borrow our paper.

so there isnt a waste of newpaper

however our school makes everyone order the newspaper weekly and when we receive our paper we just chuck it into the bins immediately cus we are just not interested. what a waste of paper! i guess this is what is happening at your area too.

  6. Yes

  7. We get two that usually go right in the garbage, unread.
