Environmentally Aware??

My family has never really been that conservative-big house, big cars, lots of food, lots of trash, you get the picture. Now that all this research has popped up about the environment and how destructive humans, especially a family of five, can be, i want to start doing my part. What are some cheap and easy ways to make my family, and our lifestyle, more eco-friendly?

  1. don't have three kids

  2. well there are many things that you can do to help the environment. You can start by recycling your trash, and use green bags when shopping at the grocery store instead of using plastic bags. there are organizations that you could join. you could plant trees, use less water when taking showers. drive only the necessary so u wont create pollution.

Not sure if this helps but i hope you can contribute to make this planet a better one for the next generations.

  3. -Recycling is always good, especially if you have curbside pickup in your area.  Contact your local waste management department to find out about what recycling options are available in your area.

-If you fertilize your lawn, do so only sparingly and use an environmentally friendly fertilizer.  I live in the Chesapeake Bay area, and a huge problem for the bay right now is fertilizer running out of yards, through the rain drainage systems, and into the waterways.  This causes algae blooms which are so big that they block sunlight to plants deeper in the water.  Without light, the deeper plants die, cutting off oxygen to fish.

-Cutting down on plastic bags is helpful.  A lot of grocery stores are starting to sell cloth bags for about a buck or so.  You can also get them for free a lot of times at environmental festivals (if there's anything going on tonight for Earth Day, you might want to check there) or as gifts with donations to different places.

-If you have to replace appliances any time soon, consider Energy Star appliances.  These are certified by the EPA to be energy-saving, which is good for the environment and your wallet.

-Keep your car well-maintained.  Keeping up with routine maintenance and keeping your tires properly inflated will increase your gas mileage, which helps reduce pollution and saves you money.

These are just a few.  I'm sure you'll get plenty more.  Happy Earth Day!

  4. many things can be done:

    CNG cars can be used.

improved water management practices that reduce or enhance the beneficial use of water. [8]. A water conservation measure is an action, behavioral change, device, technology, or improved design or process implemented to reduce water loss, waste, or use. Water efficiency is a tool of water conservation. That results in more efficient water use and thus reduces water demand. The value and cost-effectiveness of a water efficiency measure must be evaluated in relation to its effects on the use and cost of other natural resources (e.g. energy or chemicals).

planting can help. if lots of food is used, plant fruits and vegetables.

just to improve the looks of your house hang some variegated leafed plants.

Set up a daily online search of the issues that are most important to you – climate change, amphibians, forests, oceans, gorillas, or anything else.

Find out if your city or town has a green plan and if so, what it looks like.

Take a look at your water, electric, and gas bills today so you can see how much you’re saving later on when you begin to live more efficiently.

Calculate how far you drive or fly every month and then start thinking about ways to cut back.

  5. If you've got a big house, chances are you've got a big yard. Convert as much as you can into a garden to grow your own food and turn a wasteful monoculture of unproductive Kentucky blue stem into a thriving bit of sustainable local agriculture. You can then compost your organic wastes and return the nutrients directly to the soil.
