Question:

Environmentally responsible gift for 13 y/o girl into animals?

My niece is turning 13 next month. She doesn't have much (and I don't live near her) but she's sort of like my baby sister too. I know she'd like something wildlife related, and I'd like it to be something better than just a stuffed animal. She's not really a girly girl but she is somewhat artistic. Ideally it'd be something relating to a non-profit organization that gives her a small gift (like a stuffed animal or t-shirt) and also a certificate or something (via snail mail...no computer) saying that a donation was made in her name or something to that affect. I work for a non-profit (but we don't really have anything like that) and I don't make much $$. Ideally it'd be under $30, maybe a little bit over with shipping. She's in NY, I'm in AZ. Any help at all is appreciated.

  1. I would get in contact with a local group in her area and provide her a ride to work in the field of an enviromentalist for one day. It would help her feel important. Like a mentoring program. Also I would create an enviromental blog for her and give her the passwords. Call a non profit in NY that deals with that sort of thing.

  2. You could get her a book about animals, printed on recycled paper, made by a non profit organization, or something close to that.  Or maybe a gift card for a bookstore.  Kids have too many stuffed animals and clothes these days.  Try something that will help them learn and be interesting to them, too.

  3. a leaf with writing on it

  4. world wildlife fund buy her a panda, or an elephant. or better still buy her a goat, this will benefit people who get the goat and she can see the progress.

  5. Here are a bunch of World Wildlife Fund calendars available at Barnes & Nobel. They're $12 each.

  6. How about a years subscription to National Geographic kids, or you could get her the adult version as well..At 13 she should be old enough for it, and I'm sure she would love it.  It's not really costly either.

About 34 bucks for a year.

  7. Is there any animals she like in particular..is she into birds, reptiles, mammals, insects, etc.?? You can buy her a field guide to the animals she is most interested in.  You can also get her a subscription to an animal/environmental magizine...a gift that will last all year long.  Why not subscribe her to the National Wildlife Federation magizine.  Some of the memberships come with a magizine subscription AND a gift.

  8. You could donate to the humane society in her name and have them send her a thank you card..or you could put together a gift basket of organic hair/skin products that say they're natural and they dont test on animals. Maybe you could buy her a couple books on how to be more environmentally friendly, good vegetarian recipes (if she is one), etc.

  9. I found a website where you adopt an African animal, they would send her a toy of the same species as the adopted animal, 1 year membership, adoption certificate for framing and a fact sheet with a pic of the animal she was adopting. Sounds great, is cheap and looks adorable.

  10. How about a membership in NWF, National Wildlife Federation. She would be able to go on line and learn about the environment and the animals  of the world and what she can do to help protect them, things a 13 yr. old can do. The membership may even be free. If it is, you could go to their on line gift shop and pick out something appropriate for her in the price range of your choice. NWF has a lot of volunteer opportunities that can be done where ever you live. I have a high respect for the organization.

  11. The National Wildlife Federation and World Wildlife Fund both have the option to make donations in the name of someone else. WWF also has the option of "adopting" an endangered species. With a $50 donation she'll also get a stuffed animal that looks like her adopted animal. There are other things you can do too, but I haven't looked into them that much.

  12. Hi.  I am also turning 13 next month and I am also into animals and environmentally friendly things so I will tell you something I would love.  If you go to the ASPCA (american society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) website there is a store, you can buy gifts for pets or people who love pets and a lot of the stuff is under $30, it's really nice, and the money you pay to buy it goes to the ASPCA.  I am not sure if you can get something that says you donated to buy it (I have never bought something there before) but you could make a thoughtful little card saying that she helped animals.  Here is the link:

    gifts $35 and under: http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pag...

  13. go to www.defenders.org - thats the National Defenders of Wildlife page. You can adopt animals for $25, you get a stuffed animal and a certificate. Good luck! oh, and i know for a fact that 13 year olds like them.
