Enzo Calzaghe back in action, gets license after completion of mandatory BBBC course – Boxing News
Enzo Calzaghe, one of the most highly acclaimed trainer of several world champions, is back in the sport of boxing as according to a recent tiding, the 61-year-old has been issued the training licence after completion of the mandatory first aid course advised
by British Boxing Board of Control.
As per the details, Enzo, whose licence was cancelled in March, was advised to undergo a mandatory three to four hour course so as to enhance his abilities as a trainer and become aware of the latest developments in keeping good and apropos care of the clients.
Initially a lot of fuss was made about it and Enzo did not take the regulator’s order in good faith as a result, in accordance with another prohibition issued by BBBC, the Italian hailing coach was halted from being in the corner of Enzo Maccarinelli, former
EBU cruiserweight champion, in his bout against Shane McPhilbin.
Later on, after much hesitancy Enzo took the advice and after successful completion of the course is now back in action with the official permission of BBBC. While explaining the details about the real scenario Robert Smith, general secretary BBBC, commented
that Enzo’s licence lapsed when his son Joe Calzaghe, former WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF super middleweight champion retired.
It must be noted that Joe announced his retirement in 2009 and since his father Enzo was the trainer, his license also got cancelled. Since then Enzo did not apply for the renewal and when he did do so in 2012 he had to face a new development of first achieving
a certificate in first aid before becoming a BBBC licensed trainer.
Smith stated, “Mr Calzaghe’s original licence lapsed a couple of years ago after Joe retired and he didn’t renew it. When he looked to take out a new licence, he went before the Welsh area boxing council and was duly recommended subject to a completing
a British Boxing Board of Control first aid course.”
Robert further revealed that Enzo was sent two separate invitations to attend two separate courses held in January and March, adding that the Italian simply did not reply. While summing up his point of view the BBBC official remarked that Enzo just needs
to attend and clear the course, adding after that it is a mandatory course introduced for the betterment of the pugilists.
According to recent updates, Enzo has finally attended, completed and successfully grabbed a certificate of the aforementioned training course on June 7, 2012. Calzaghe, who owns ‘Calzaghe Promotions’ has produced many world champions.
Some of the prominent names include his own son Joe Calzaghe, Nathan Cleverly, current WBO light heavyweight champion, current British and EBU lightweight champion Gavin Rees, Bradley Pryce and many others.
With the return of the veteran coach, experience spread over 30 long years has also returned to the sport of boxing and will certainly in one way or another benefit the sport.
