Enzo Maccarinelli challenges Nathan Cleverly to an all-Welsh clash – Boxing news
Former World Boxing Organization & World Boxing Union world champion Enzo Maccarinelli has challenged the newly crowned World Boxing Organization light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly to an all-Welsh clash.
The former World Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Maccarinelli was at ringside when Cleverly clobbered Aleksy Kuziemski at the London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, May 21, 2011.
“That's definitely a fight that's on the cards and what a big Welsh fight that would be - hopefully at Swansea's Liberty Stadium,” said Maccarinelli.
However, Cleverly responded saying he was targeting a few big American names.
Maccarinelli also commented on the Executioner Bernard Hopkins, who became boxing’s oldest world champion a few hours later by beating Canada’s Jean Pascal in Montreal to secure his World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Organization light-heavyweight
titles. While speaking on his inclusion, he said he did not think that his promoter Frank Warren is going to put him anywhere near Hopkins.
He remarked, “He's 46 years of age but he's still class. You saw the trouble he gave Joe. Some people questioned that decision but I thought Joe won very well. But Hopkins still caused trouble against the best fighter on the planet - Joe was the best fighter
on the planet. Nathan is not the best fighter on the planet.”
The Big Mac, Maccarinelli, who considered retirement after being beaten four times in a three-year timeframe, is now hoping to resurrect his career by dropping from cruiserweight to light-heavyweight division.
The 30-year-old Maccarinelli reckons that his fight with Nathan Cleverly could capture the imagination of the Welsh public.
He told media after commenting on Cleverly’s fourth-round stoppage win over Kuziemski that he never wanted to have a match against Nathan.
However, on the same note he said, “But Nathan Cleverly's dad, Vince, feels the need put me down and belittle me in front of people and on national television and papers. So, yes, that would be a fight I'd like.”
Let’s see whether Nathan Cleverly accepts Maccarinelli’s challenge or not, but if he does, it is certainly is going to be a very promising match.
