Enzo Maccarinelli outwits Shane McPhilbin to become new BBBC cruiserweight champion - Boxing News
Enzo Maccarinelli, the former WBO cruiserweight champion, received a unanimous decision win against the surging defending champion Shane McPhilbin to become the new British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) cruiserweight owner for the first time in his illustrious
career hence fulfilling his late father’s dream.
The 12-round skirmish headlined the pay-per-view co-promoted by Frank Warren and P.J. Rowson of First Team Promotions and the ring for the March 23, 2012 engagement between ‘the rookie and the veteran pugilist’ was stretched at Civic Hall situated in Wolverhampton,
West Midlands, United Kingdom.
Enzo, 31, was entering the ring for the 40th time in his hefty career with a resume that boasted a total 34 wins, 27 of them by knockout. The 31-year-old Enzo was coming from a two-bout knockout victory after losing his EBU (European) cruiserweight gold
to Alexander Frenkel.
Shane, on the other hand, was seriously overshadowed by Enzo’s experience. The 26-year-old was entering in his career’s 11th bout. The young lad collected eight wins and five of them by knockout. This was Shane’s first BBBC cruiserweight title defence after
he successfully knocked Leon Williams out to become the owner of the prestigious British cruiserweight gold.
Enzo clearly before the bout stated that he wants to make his father proud by winning this gold adding that he did enjoy his reign as a world champion but the charm of becoming the owner of the apex British gold is a new feeling altogether.
As it was predicted, Enzo handled and literally manipulated the inexperienced Shane flawlessly and collected a unanimous decision win in his favour. The bout started and initially, Shane rattled Enzo’s world and knocked him down twice.
Enzo was flattened on the ring floor in just the first round but later on made an impressive comeback by putting his ample experience to good use. The former world champion Enzo, strived hard to connect well targeted jabs to not only collect a knockout win
but also ample points to outscore the young lad, if things go the other way.
Shane who had just one thing in his mind, to grab a knockout victory, seriously made a huge mistake by completely unloading his whole strength in the beginning warm up rounds as a result, the defending champion Shane, clearly exhibited a sluggish and fatigued
performance in the later rounds.
All the three judges got convinced and allocated 115-111, 116-111, and 115-110 in Enzo’s favour officially denoting him as the new owner of the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) cruiserweight gold.
Enzo now has accomplished his career’s last remaining feat and boasts 35 wins and 27 of them by knockout. Shane, who definitely needs to walk a long path to reach Enzo’s calibre, collected his career’s third defeat and now has eight wins in a total 11 skirmishes.
