Mark Rein, the VP of the studio behind the Unreal Engine and Gears of War trilogy, is hoping to keep home consoles ahead of competition from Apple.
Before we begin this particular bit of news it is important to ensure that all the readers at the same level when it comes to their knowledge of video games. An engine is basically the software on which the game itself is built and the Unreal engine is one
of the most widely used in that regard.
If anyone has played the Gears of War series, Mortal Kombat, the Medal of Honor games (excluding the reboot) and many others, will have come across this particular engine and its capabilities.
In fact, it was Epic Games that convinced Microsoft to increase the RAM of the Xbox 360, a move which cost a figure around $1-billion. A move, which also paid off big time as developers now had more memory with which to provide a more immersive gaming experience.
It seems that the studio is up to the same demands again and seems determined to ensure that the new platforms settle for nothing less than the best.
Mark Rein, the VP of Epic Games, explained the reason behind their Samaritan demo, which showed off some eye-popping visuals and levels of realism.
“We are absolutely (pushing the platform developers) every day. This is why we did Samaritan and why we’re doing a really high-end demo in the room here. We really are pushing these guys, because if they don’t, Apple will go right past them.”
That statement comes in the wake of the announcement that the latest iPad, the iPad 3, will be able to make full use of the Unreal engine and is more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.Mr. Rein also believed that although console game and gaming
on the iPad were both great in their own right, each should push the other to bring the best out of it and each should focus on providing a different experience to the gamer.
