Apple is a threat to home consoles according to the VP of Epic Games as he explains his point of view and how his studio is pushing Sony and Microsoft.
Mark Rein, the Vice President of Epic Games, is hoping that the next generation of home consoles bring something special to the table or they risk losing out to Apple in the long run.
He began by comparing the two experiences that the home consoles and the iPad provide and believed that both could co-exist.
“We really like the big screen, home console experience and we really like iPad gaming. We like all these gaming experiences and we don’t think consumers want them to go away.”
Mr. Rein continued by pointing out that each platform needed to “stay true to what they are” and as long as they did that neither could completely take over the other and there would be enough interest in both in order to sustain them.
He explained that consoles needed to make larger leaps than the iPad if they want to stay ahead in the long run, “If you don’t stretch just far enough, you don’t just have enough of a difference to make people want to take the leap with you.”
The VP claimed that Epic Games saw no limits when it came to what they could achieve with the technological changes that take place and went on to state that they were, “always going to be pushing and I’m sure we’ll be pushing for more than is possible to
give. But yes, we feel that’s kind of our duty. That’s what Epic is here for.”
Epic’s track record speaks for itself as a large number of developers, who do not have an engine of their own to power their titles, utilise the Unreal Engine and although Mr. Rein admits that that particular number may decrease over time, as long as it
benefits the industry in one way or the other they would be satisfied.
One can only hope that Epic does with every console what it did with the Xbox 360 and convinces the platform developers to deliver something that is truly next-gen.
