Epic games president Mike Capps says the future of gaming is with cell phones
Epic Games President, Mike Capps has gone on to take a rather bold step by stating that there is no point in developing next-gen consoles. He then went on to state that he feels the real challenge at hand, was to target the mobile phones instead.
At the moment, the wii U, Xbox 720 and PS4 are scheduled to be hitting the markets in the near future and with the world looking to focus on what the games would be like on those consoles, Capps seems to be looking in a completely different direction. Capps feels that exhausting all of a company’s resources on next gen consoles is rather pointless, as cellular phones are looking to take over, even in the gaming department.
Capps seemed to be basing all of his words, considering how apple had taken cellular devices to the next level.
When talking about how he felt, Capps is reported to have said, “If you look at the ridiculous acceleration of iPhone hardware and technology, trying to find a sweet spot for tech to make your mobile game... I mean, what would your mobile game look like in 2015? Who knows how fast that's going to operate, but you can bet it's going to be faster than an Xbox 360.”
He then went on to emphasise on the fact that companies need to focus on trying to get the most out of cell phones, mainly due to the fact that they are more easily available and more abundant, as compared to consoles.
“So I think that's the real challenge for us now, rather than worrying about the difference between a couple consoles and some order of magnitude, whether 3X or 4X. It's about how do we deal with iPhone 8... if you watch where the gamers are going that's where they are,” he added.
Capps then went on to mention the limitless possibilities that the cell phones would have in the future. He highlighted their ability to connect to the tv, offer wireless connectivity, have the ability to be used as hubs for social networks and to pretty much keep you connected with everything, while you are on the move.
It is easy to see where Capps is coming from. Apple had recently gone on to become the most valuable company in the world, which tells us that he might just be on to something. Cellular phones have become the desired target for most game developers, mainly because of the fact that there are so many areas on the handheld devices that are yet to be explored.
Nonetheless, that being said, most would agree that perhaps cell phones and next gen consoles can both progress simultaneously.
