Epiphanny Prince strikes late as Chicago Sky carve out a 74-73 win over New York Liberty: WNBA Recap
Epiphanny Prince knocked down a dagger from downtown with just 31 seconds to go in the game and put Chicago Sky on the path to their second straight win with a 74-73 victory over the New York Liberty on Sunday night at Allstate
Arena. The Sky are now just one and half game behind Atlanta Dream for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Prince, a WNBA All-Star this season, ended the game with 10 points, hitting 2 for 5 three-pointers.
Sylvia Fowles notched a double-double with a team-high 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Fowles, who is averaging 19.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, also blocked four shot, dished out three assists and shot 8 for 12 from
the floor. Erin Thorn also added 17 points and dished out four assists in the victory.
Four Liberty players also scored in double figures on the night. Plenette Pierson topped all the scorers with 19 points, shooting 9 for 13 from the field, and six rebounds. Nicole Powell tallied 15 points, grabbed five rebounds
and dished out three assists Cappie Pondexter had 14 points and eight assists in the loss. Kia Vaughn contributed 12 points and eight rebounds for Liberty, who are third in the East with a 16-13 record.
Chicago shot 49.2 percent (29 for 59) from the field and 83.3 percent (10 for 12) from free throw line while New York shot only 40.3 percent (31 for 77) from the floor and 60 percent (6 for 10) from the line. Sky committed 17 turnovers
as compared to just 10 by the visiting team.
Liberty held a 19-16 lead with 02:56 to go in the first quarter before Chicago scored the last ten points of the quarter and carried a 26-19 lead into the second. New York outscored Sky 21-14 in the second quarter and tied the
game at 40, heading into the locker room.
Chicago went ahead by 51-48 with 05:18 remaining in the third quarter but Liberty then went on a 12-7 run and maintained a 60-58 lead at the end of the quarter.
Sky scored the first 12 points of the last quarter and went ahead by ten points, 70-60, early in the quarter. New York countered though and came right back into the contest by scoring the next 11 points of the quarter and gain
a 71-70 advantage. Young pinned a free throw for Chicago on the next possession and tied the game at 71.
Pondexter responded with a jumper to give New York a two-point lead, 73-71 but Prince hit a trey to make it 74-73 for good. Pondexter missed a three in the last seconds of the game and Sky squeaked out a win.
