Epsom Derby 2011 drama - Queen’s Carlton House third , Pour Moi wins
Queen Elizabeth II accompanied by Prince William and his wife Kate, as well as, Prince Harry graced the Investec / Epsom Derby 2011.
The whole of England had great expectations and were full of excitement about the Queen’s new horse, Carlton House’s chances of breaking a 102 year victory drought at Epsom Derby for the Royal Family.
Jockey, Ryan Moore, was chosen to mount Carlton House for this all important race.
Going into the race, Carlton House was all over the news. Being the Queen’s horse is one thing but getting news from the vet that he has problems with his joints was a hard pill to swallow, especially when the fate of winning the Epsom Derby for the Queen
was riding on him.
The closest Queen Elizabeth II has come to winning the Derby was in 1953, when her best placed horse, Aureole, finished second in the Derby.
But none the less it was an exciting and thrilling derby race. Carlton House eventually finished third and French trainer, Andre Fabre, won his first English Derby of his career when his horse Pour Moi, and, jockey, Mickael Barzalona finished on top.
Pour Moi made the race all the more exciting with his come-from-behind remarkable performance. He seems to be a special horse and displayed his double acceleration when it was most needed.
Both trainer and jockey won their first Epsom Derby. 19-year old jockey, Mickael Barzalona, won the Classic Derby in his first attempt, which is an achievement in itself.
"I always felt confident during the race, and even though I was at the back the other good horses were just in front of me”, Barzalona told England’s Press Association. “It is fantastic and I don't realize yet what has happened".
It was not the worst day for the Queen and her Family because Carlton House showed enough potential and certainly can be considered for future races. She could afford a smile and still was happy with the performance of her horse, who was mounted by jockey,
Ryan Moore.
It was evident that by winning the Epsom Derby by defeating the Queen’s horse, Mickael Barzalona, would not gain popularity among English fans, but he can take winning over popularity any day in his first attempt.
