Animal interests are as important to them as comparable interests are to humans. Equal interests should be counted equally; therefore animal interests must be given the same weight as comparable human interests. For example if we compare the interest in survival of a human and a cow, the cow has the same interest in staying alive as a human does. Both equally do NOT want to die. The interest in staying alive is of equal importance to the cow and human. So if both the cow and the human share an equal interest in survival, why is it considered fair to place human interests above the interests of the cow?
