  1. No, the equator is simply the "line" that separates the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It is hotter here because this is where sunlight directly hits the Earth. The poles are cooler because of the bent angle of the sunlight, when they even get sunlight.


  2. The equator is in imaginary line along the earth.  It does nothing except for a map.
