I'm thinking about college, careers, and such. But I guess I need some help. I want to work with animals, specifically horses. What jobs are there that involve working with them and/or other animals? What colleges should I look at?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. You might want to consider being a vet for large animals. This includes horses, cows, and such. I would need to know around what area you live to provide you with a list of colleges you could attend.

  3. Virgina ketucky and morth carolina have excelent colleges; that deal with equation and live stock. you can be a equine vet; a trainer; a horse rescue; a jockey; and if you want a job now just for some extra cash go to a local barn and muck stall brush horse and if you know how you can even exercise them.

  4. there's many jobs, and it would really depend on what your interests are.  for some of the non medical equine jobs, you can get an idea of what's out there at www.yardandgroom.com

    colleges...  medical related, i'd look into penn state (UPenn?), which is the first vet school in the u.s.  or cornell u, in ithac (sp?) ny.

    best of luck

  5. i can't recommend collages cause i'm in Australia, but some equine jobs are;

    Horse Breeding; stud manager, stud groom, stallion master, broodmare manager, foaling attendant, pedigree analyst or bloodstock agent.

    Competition Industry; riding instructor, coach, events manager, breeder and professional rider and eventer, groomer, marketing and public relations manager.

    Equine Health; equine veterinary nurse with specialty areas in neonatal care, intensive care, nutritional expert,  trauma and rehabilitation, equine dentist, farrier and various practitioners of equine natural therapies (i.e. massage, acupuncture, myotherapy etc) and chiropractor

  6. Equine Vet

    Stable Manager

    Trainer

    Breeding Manager

    Farrier

    There are many things you could do.  Most of the career paths, you can basically Major/Minor in one thing.  If you wanted to be a vet obviously thats a little different.  For myself, I'm currently in college and plan to have my own business for training, breeding, and boarding.

    I currently attend University of Wisconsin River Falls.  They have a great equine program.  You can major Animal Science-Equine Management or Animal Science-Equine Science.  Equine Management would be your business side and the Science would be more of the choice if you wanted to become a vet.  They have great classes for this major and very well trained school horses.  While here they also have IHSA Western riding team and IHSA English Riding team.  If interested they also have a Rodeo Team for the barrel racers.

    Another college I know of is University of Findlay in Ohio.  You can major either western or english specifically and choose training or business.  If you're not worried about price this might be a great school.  This was my first choice, I just didn't have the money to attend here.  I believe they do have and western and english riding team.

  7. I would look at the book;

    Careers with Horses (The Comprehensive Guide to Finding Your Dream Job) by Vicki Hogue-Davis.

    I just bought it and lovelovelove it. It has 200+ career profiles, salary info, equine school information, and lots of helpful tips!
