I have a horse who's face is all white and when he goes to turn out we always put a fly mask on him but for the rest of his face Im a little concerned about it getting sunburn or sun damaged so i was curious to see if there were any equine sunscreens that I can get and where to get them(no local store so i order everything on line)and if not can i use human sunscreen on him? also i know about the Santa Fe sunscreen by Absorbine but its like a fly spray/sunscreen and its got a low SPF so im looking for something other than that.

thanks in advance!

  1. Mine have pink noses so I use a water resistant kiddie's sun cream.

  2. well, we used to have a paint with the same thing, and we just bought the highest SpF baby sun screen, the kind with the baby with no pants on on it (lol..)

It worked fine, was cheaper, and made him smell like a baby!

in general, when in doubt baby products are safe to use on horses.

  3. I use this equine sunscreen called Filta-Bac on my pink skinned horse but when that runs out, regular human sunscreen is fine to use on horses as well.

  4. I do what Horsez does - there are 3 horses  here (turned out 24/7) who have white muzzles and burn terribly in the Summer.  The sunscreen never worked, and I always worried about the sunscreen contaminating the water  - - I'm a water freak - - So what we found works is the Crusader fly mask which comes down and covers the nose.

  5. My vet told me to use human sunscreen on my paint.  I use it, and I also keep her in a long nose fly mask most of the time...when she wears that, she doesn't need sunscreen.

  6. Baby sunscreen!!!!!!!! This works great! We used this one our paint who has a completely white face and body, minus his tail and ears. We get the kind that is blue, purple, or pink when you put it on and dries clear. It is a sensitive formula since it's for babies, so it wont irritate the horse's skin. He hasn't gotten burned all summer!

Also, we bought a fly mask with the ears and extended nose flap. It covers about 90% of his face, which helps alot.

Also Vetrolin Shine has SPF. It's not strong, but it's good for non-sensative areas like legs and body, and it repels dirt and makes them shiny!

  7. I have a horse with a pink nose and white face.

I just put a fly mask on her and then put baby sunscreen (SPF 50+) on her nose.

It hasn't seemed to irritate her skin at all.

Everyone who I've asked just told me to use normal sunscreen on her.

  8. Where I work with horses we put sunscreen on all our pink nosed horses in summer. We use something called Filtabac, which is a very thick cream you just spread all over the nose. There are several other brands with different names though, many of which are available online. They all have very high SPF but some are not water-resistant so keep that in mind.

You can use regular human sunscreen but be aware that some may have ingredients which horses may not like the smell of. Also some ingredients may cause your horse's skin to react to it badly. A mild one, like baby sunscreen, should work though, but if/when you can, one designed for horses (and other sun affected animals) may be better.

Good luck. I hope you find a good one to suit your horse.

  9. We sell a lot of Cashel fly masks for this problem - they usually will get burned on the bridge of their nose between the nostrils and eyes and around the nostrils because that's got the sun always beating on it.  The Cashel fly masks are available with a covering over this part of the nose that keeps the sun off.

Also, there IS a sunscreen, but I can't remember the maker of it right now.....I can picture the bottle - it's a white bottle with blue print and a big sunflower on it.....it's specifically a sunscreen only, not a fly spray.  I know we stock it at our store and I've seen it in Valley Vet supply catalogs and others.

I wouldn't use human sunscreen on them - not sure how those chemicals would affect them if they l**k it somehow.

Here's that one we have at the store:

http://www.123tack.com/winning/dept.asp?... - it's the white bottle with yellow print (I had it pictured in my mind wrong.) We sell a lot of it for this purpose along with the Cashel fly masks.. let's see if I can find that....here it is: http://www4.shopping.com/xGS-Cashel_Crus... - there's one with a black nose piece and another with a net nose piece.....

    Hope this helps!

  10. DESITIN...it is diaper rash cream, but works like nothing else. It is zinc oxide which is the main ingredient in normal sunscreens, but why we have had so much success with it is because it STAYS ON. You will save money and not have pink noses!!

That being said, it stays on everything! Wear gloves, and don't get it on your clothes!

  11. youcan get full face masks that cover and protect the nose, ears and face from UV rays. or you can buy horse sunscreen

  12. I've always used a human sunscreen, the baby kind and high protection level:)
