  1. Although, Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava in the world, harvesting is not mechanized. The total area harvested of cassava in 2003 was 3.1 million hectares with an average yield of about eleven tonnes per hectare. This has risen to 3.8 million hectares with an average of 11.84 metric tonnes per hectare in 2005. Cassava tubers can be kept in the ground prior to harvesting for up to two years, but once harvested, they begin to deteriorate.

Farmers are therefore faced with serious shortage of labor for harvesting and processing the high-yielding  cassava varieties. Thus, developing a labor-saving technology for cassava harvesting is the most critical challenge for cassava farmers and a limiting factor to cassava production in Nigeria. This challenge is more urgent than further increases in cassava yield.
