Equuleus outplays Heathcote in Hampton Cup: 11-9 – Polo Update
Kris Kampsen and Mariano Gonzalez scored five times each in the crucial encounter, as Equuleus punched an 11-9 victory over talented Heathcote in the Hampton Cup played at the Bridgehampton Polo Club.
Heathcote’s Tommy Biddle showed impressive performances but to no avail. Commenting over the game, he said, “We had some opportunities, but we just didn’t take advantage of them. It was a very competitive match. The field cut up a bit making it a bit difficult.
But it was the same for both teams. I was happy with the way the team played but not happy about the loss.”
The game was opened in the hands of Kris Kampsen who marked a field goal and brought Equuleus into the scoring-net. In the later time, Mariano Gonzalez notched a goal and reduced the lead down to a single goal. Heathcote earned three goals in the head of
handicaps were leading after the first seven minutes of play, 3-2.
In the second set of play, Heathcote started playing a fast game and obtained another two goals while holding opponents only for a single goal. Naco Taverna and Tommy Biddle scored once apiece and stretched out the edge up to three goals. From the other
end, Kampsen did the action and closed out the chukka with Equuleus trailing by two goals.
However, the entire scenario changed in the third set of play when the supple defence from Equuleus shut-off the Heathcote strikes and locked horns at half-time. Gonzalez scored off the penalty shots and levelled the score at five-all.
Both the Heathcote and Equuleus were playing the game superbly. Tommy Biddle scored off a penalty shot and put Heathcote ahead to the front. However, the lead could not live long and Kampsen did it even at six-each. Owing to a fast style of play, Steve Lefkowitz
managed his maiden goal of the day and regained a single goal lead for Heathcote at the end of the fourth chukka.
In the fifth set of play, the team Equuleus flexed their muscles and obtained two goals while holding Heathcote scoreless in the seven and half minutes of play. Mariano Obregon and Kampsen scored one goal each and established their advantage for the first
time at 8-7.
In the last seven minutes of play, both the teams started putting extra efforts to take the game into their favour. Biddle opened the period with a sixty yard penalty conversion and had it all even at eighth-all. Gonzalez notched two goals to increase pressure
on the opponent side. Lefkowitz scored another goal for Heathcote but to no avail. Kampsen scored off another penalty shot and made the victory possible for his side.
