Equuleus trounces KIG in Hampton Cup: 7-5 – Polo Update
Kris Kampsen, the veteran player from Equuleus delivered the game-winning performance with six notches to carry his team to a 7-5 victory over KIG in the 2011 edition of the Hampton Cup being contested at the Bridgehampton Polo Club.
Kampsen while speaking to the media after the match said that it was one of his best performances. He stated, “It was just one of those kinds of games. They (KIG) must have had over a dozen knock-ins. I just shanked it.”
He was of the opinion that they earned plenty of chances in the in the game but failed to convert all the opportunities.
On the other hand, Luis Escobar of KIG also spoke with the media saying they had a couple of opportunities but to no avail. He further stated, “We had a couple of opportunities. We had our chances but just didn’t convert them. We came so close to tying it
up. The ball actually hit the goal posts and sat there, a foot away from the goal line before it was cleared.”
The pace of the game was quite slow from the very start of the match, as both Equuleus and KIG were playing cautious style of play. Despite back-to-back attacks from the two sides, no team could open the scoring in the first seven and half minutes of play.
Kampsen received a sure goal-scoring chance but failed to do so.
Both the quartets moved into the second frame with holding nil-each score. In the second set of play, Kris Kampsen notched a couple of goals from the field efforts and put Equuleus ahead at the scorecard. From the other side, Luis Escobar was the only player
who scored a solitary goal and brought his side into the score-net. The period ended with Equuleus sitting at the top by a single goal lead, 2-1.
In the third set of play, Michele Dorignac of KIG marked a couple of goals and established their first lead of the match. However, it did not last for long and Kampsen accounted for another goal and had it all even at three-all at the halftime.
The fourth frame was also quite low-scoring, as only a single goal was scored by Kampsen of Equuleus side. On the other hand, the Equuleus defenders shut-out the defence of opponent KIG attackers. KIG was trailing by a single goal, 4-3 with two frames left
to fight.
In the second last period, KIG attackers flexed their muscles and improved their results. Nacho Figueras scored a tying goal while Dorignac put them ahead onto the scoreboard. In the waning moments, Kampsen notched two goals finished the chukka with holding
back a single goal advantage. Mariano Gonzalez scored the final goal of the match and sealed the victory for Equuleus at 7-5.
