  1. What he means is

    Normal guitar tuning is EADGBE

    Drop D tuning is          DADGBE

We like drop D tuning because you can barre the bottom three strings and make a power chord. That's the 777xxx chord, a drop D power chord. It's the same thing as playing 577xxx in standard tuning, but it's way easier (1 finger vs 3).

Now if you drop D down 1 step you get CGCFAD.

This is Drop D down 1 step. When you tune down you make it sound deeper and darker. Some bands take this to an extreme. For a lot of the stuff you hear on the radio, though, tuning 1/2 to 1 steps down is pretty common. It also makes it easier for some people to sing along with the guitar, esp if you have a deeper voice.

You don't *have* to tune down to play the song, you can just stick with Drop D standard and be fine... it just won't be in the same key as the recording. As long as you can sing along with it, no big deal. People transpose all the time so they can sing along to a song they're playing. My voice seems to prefer the guitar being dropped 1/2 step, for instance. It's crazy - I have such a hard time singing in standard, but drop it 1/2 step and all of a sudden it's so much easier. Crazy...
