“Eradication of spot fixing impossible” says Ijaz Butt
Chairman of the Pakistan cricket board Ijaz Butt has come out of the closet to state that it is impossible to root out spot fixing by the PCB or the ICC. The Pakistan cricket team came under heavy scrutiny earlier in the summers after they were alleged by
a British Tabloid ‘The News of the World’ that some of its players were involved in spot fixing and took money to bowl no balls during the match.
Interestingly enough, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ijaz-Butt-c64128 initially took a very strong stance against the ICC; however soon softened up after the ICC gave Butt and PCB an ultimatum to set things in order or face severe action. Talking to a local TV channel, Ijaz Butt stated that
controlling spot fixing especially before it takes place is a challenge not only for the PCB but also for the ICC as well.
Ever since PCB was instructed by the ICC to take note of things, the PCB has formed an integrity committee that is responsible for conducting surveys on the accounts and assets of players. Butt was involved in another controversy earlier in the year, when
he claimed that the English players had taken “enormous amounts of money” to throw away a match that Pakistan had won. With the statement he not only undermined the performance of the Pakistan team but also questioned the character of the English team without
proper proof.
He then had to issue a strongly worded apology to avoid legal action against him.
"It has to be an all out effort from all concerned to ensure that such wrongdoing does not occur in the future. PCB and ICC have taken a lot of steps, future plans have been drafted which pursues a policy of zero tolerance to corruption," Butt said.
The tainted trio of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 cricketers are expected to appear before the ICC in January. The lawyers of all three of the players who have been alleged of being involved in spot fixing have started to prepare their cases. Earlier the lawyers had contested
the provisional suspension of the players; however the ICC decided to reject their petitions.
