It was recently revealed that the French international will have to undergo a liver transplant after getting his tumour removed last season.
Last season Barcelona had to settle with the absence of a lot of players throughout the season.
The Spanish centre-back and the club captain, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carles-Puyol-c8331 was recovering from his respective knee injury while others also kept on being absent time after time. However, Eric Abidal was the player who consistently filled the void for most of the defensive
absentees.
It was not until the start of the year 2011, when it was told by the club doctors that Eric Abidal was suffering from a liver tumour.
The news came down as a shock for not only the Barcelona roster, but also for the footballing world, as Eric Abidal was performing phenomenally for the Spanish champions, helping them win the Spanish La Liga and also helping them qualify for the final of
the Copa del Rey.
However, the French defender was rested by Josep Guardiola and he underwent the much-needed operation, and recovered perfectly enough by the time Barcelona faced Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Champions League.
Abidal was able to perform for major part of the game and helped the Catalans win the European title, and also lifted the trophy at the end of the day.
This season, Abidal showed the world his phenomenal defensive form yet again; but, it was recently revealed the French star will have to go through a liver transplant since his operation last year was not enough to hold him through.
The 32-year-old underwent a surgery this Tuesday and according to the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 official website, the full-back is now recovering from the operation.
Guardiola recently spoke about Abidal’s situation and said:
“Before coming here, I’ve been told that the operation has been finished, and we’ll have to wait 48 hours to see his evolution,” Guardiola said.
“We have to be prudent. During the week we’ll know more. The next days will be crucial to see how it goes. We’ve got plenty of faith in such a strong man.”
Eric Abidal played for Barcelona last month; however, it was decided that he will have to undergo a surgery, and since then Carles Puyol has taken his place as a left-back in the first team.
