Eric Boullier: Ban on engine mapping should have been postponed until 2012 – Formula 1 news
Lotus Renault GP Eric Boullier has said the ban on engine mapping should have been postponed until the 2012 Formula 1 season as it is a change in the regulations rather than an adjustment.
“Obviously it is something that we would have loved to have postponed until next year, because we do consider it to be more of a change in regulations than an adjustment - it's a difference in interpretation. But we have to deal with what the FIA wants and
we will try not to suffer too much from this,” he said.
This means that the teams will not be allowed to adjust their engine mapping between the qualifying session and the race. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has been quite anxious about some major rule changes during the season as they have also
confirmed that the Blown Diffusers will be banned from the sport starting from the British Grand Prix.
Most of the teams have stated that the ban on engine mapping will not have much effect on the order or performance of each respective team while the FIA claims that this ban has been enforced to change the pace difference between the qualifying sessions
and races.
Boullier believes that this change in rules is “pushing it too far” as the teams are now being restricted a bit too much now.
“For example, we wouldn't even be allowed to change the pit lane speed limit between quali and the race, so if we saw that we were a little too quick during quali we would not be allowed to change it. That's why it is too far,” he added.
Nevertheless, the upcoming European Grand Prix is going to be an indicator for the teams on how much engine tweaking changes their performance between qualifying and the race.
On the other hand, the ban on Blown Diffuser is going to have a mixed impact on the teams as it is believed that Red Bull Racing will suffer a lot due to this ban while McLaren might not suffer much because of which, the championship might get even more
exciting.
