Eric Boullier: Blown Diffuser ban did not help Renault, will go for a rearward exhaust – Formula 1
Renault team principal Eric Boullier has stated that the ban on the Blown Diffuser by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) from the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season clearly had its biggest impact on Renault cars.
Boullier added that although for the Renault team it will be a big ask to develop the car with conventional exhaust system, still the team will wait for the German Grand Prix and then carry on the development for the 2011 season and for the 2012 season as
well.
The Renault team made an innovative attempt towards the exhaust system as they tried to flow the hot gases from the sides of the car rather than conventional rearward flow at the back of the car.
It did pay off in the opening part of the season as Renault were fourth on the table ahead of the Mercedes team.
But after the FIA pulled the plug on Diffuser from the British Grand Prix, Renault were clearly off the mark as their cars were struggling for grip.
Boullier now stated that team will have to give up the innovative idea and would develop a rearward system.
Boullier stated, “We also had a choice to go for the 'usual' exhaust system and unfortunately it takes a little bit of time to develop it. But even if we should see some good gain coming from the next race, we will see the development of this over the course
of this year and next year as well.”
He further added, “It is confirmed that we will try it out for Friday practice. So we may now have to change a little bit the strategy because we cannot deliver, so that includes changing the exhaust configuration, which we are going to try in Germany now.”
Renault slip down to fifth place in the 2011 Formula 1 constructors’ championship table and it will be interesting to see how the team develops the car for the German Grand Prix on July 24.
