Eric Boullier: We will have Grosjean in 2012 car if Kubica cannot come back – Formula 1 news
Lotus-Renault boss Eric Boullier has said that they would like to have GP2 Series driver Romain Grosjean in their 2012 car if their injured driver Robert Kubica cannot come back for the next season.
The team still has not received any response from Kubica about his re-joining the Enstone-based outfit following his rally crash back in February.
However, they are planning to give a chance to Grosjean for the 2012 F1 season after watching his performance for Renault in the recently held Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi.
Boullier added that he is a part of their plan and if Kubica is not back into the team, then Grosjean will start the next season for them.
The team boss talked about the French driver and mentioned that it is true that in 2009, he was not ready to be in Formula 1 sport.
Boullier commented, “Even so his performance was quite good - he was only three-tenths off the pace of Fernando even though the car was not very good at that time, which makes it even more difficult for a young driver to step into F1. When he runs on Fridays
he shows that he can deliver and gives good feedback.”
He further added that he is sure about him that he is a talented driver. In addition, he stated that it is his job to make Grosjean ready to step in well in the sport.
The Renault boss went on to mention, “And by the way, the driver market is closed anyway for 2012 so our priority is not to have a big name in the car but to have a fast car which can then be given to a big name to win races.”
He also mentioned that they know it very well that the 2012 season will be another year for rebuilding the team due to an unsatisfactory performance in the 2011 Formula 1 season. Hence, the team Renault is not in a position to attract big names now.
In the end, he said that if they want to see Renault in big teams, then they will have to introduce a more competitive car.
Let’s see whether Kubica rejoins the team for the next season or not.
