Eric Boullier believes Kimi Raikkonen can claim championship – Formula 1 news
Lotus team principal, Eric Boullier believes that their driver, Kimi Raikkonen can claim the championship title in this season, regardless of his ninth place finish in 2012 Monaco Grand Prix held at Circuit de Monaco on May 27.
The Finnish driver started the race from 8th grid position and could only be able to score 2 points as he came ninth. However, Boullier said that Raikkonen can still win the title as he is just 25 points behind the leading driver, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
“In the end, the two points we've scored are disappointing but because the field is so tight we have not lost too much ground on our opponents,” Boullier said. “We have the same number of points as Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship, while Kimi is
25 points away from Fernando Alonso who's leading the drivers' classification. Anything can still happen and the championship is wide open.”
Besides, he said that they could not deliver their best performance during the qualifying of the last race which ultimately had a negative impact on the race results.
Nevertheless, he said that they are now targeting to perform well in 2012 Canadian Grand Prix which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10. Moreover, he said that they are hoping to see improvement in the pace of their car for
the race ahead.
“We're now looking forward to Montreal, the first low downforce track of the season, where the E20 should be strong,” he said.
The British team has emerged as one of the most competent contenders in this season with their talented and experienced pair of drivers.
Additionally, it will be important to mention that during the start of the season, Boullier said that they should not be deemed as the second class team any more as they have the potential to be at the top.
Over and above, they have been trying their best to make the necessary developments and the significant preparations in order to improve the pace of their car so as to secure a competitive position in this year’s championship.
