Eric Boullier believes Kimi Raikkonen can win the championship title – Formula 1 news
Lotus team principal, Eric Boullier has said that their driver, Kimi Raikkonen can win the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship despite facing difficulties in the Italian Grand Prix.
Raikkonen could not secure a podium finish in the preceding race held at Autodromo di Monza as his car failed to match the pace of McLaren and Ferrari. However, he performed quite convincingly and managed to come 5th in the race.
On the other hand, Red Bull Racing drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber could not score even a single point as they were retired due to which the Finnish was able to improve his position to 3rd in the drivers’ championship.
Although, he is just one point ahead of the defending champion, Vettel and is quite behind the current leader, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. Nonetheless, Boullier is still feeling confident that the Finn can claim this year’s championship title.
The Frenchman said that they were aware of the fact that they would face difficulty in the previous race but he insisted that their hopes are still high for the championship.
"We knew we would struggle a little bit at Monza and that is exactly what happened," Boullier told Autosport. "But the Championship is doable of course, especially with the coming races that will suit us much more."
In addition, he said that they have planned to launch some significant updates in the Singapore GP which will help in getting the desired level of downforce to secure good result. He also said that they are expecting to be competitive in the Japanese GP
too while he said that their aim is to keep on making improvements for all the remaining races.
"We have some updates coming for Singapore already, and we believe that the downforce level and layout should suit us a little bit because at Budapest and Monaco we were fast. Japan should suit us as well, especially if we can bring our device. I think it
is going to be an interesting end to the season," he added.
Let’s see how the Enstone based team performs at the Marina Bay Street Circuit next weekend.
