Eric Boullier says Renault must remain competitive ahead of Mercedes GP – Formula 1 news
Renault team principal Eric Boullier has said that his team will have to remain competitive ahead of the Petronas-sponsored Mercedes GP until the end of 2011 Formula 1 season.
The team is in the fourth position in the constructors’ championship ahead of Mercedes GP. The team principal added that they have to show a better run in the next races of the ongoing season and maintain their current position ahead of other strong teams.
Boullier discussed the recently held Montreal race weekend and said that it was an unbelievable experience for the team, as their driver Vitaly Petrov made a good progress over there after his crash in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Petrov’s performance in the Canadian Grand Prix has impressed the team a lot, as he scored some decent points for the team and ended up in the fifth place.
Boullier said, “It was completely unusual to have such a deluge but, as we thought it would be, the race was very exciting and a fantastic spectacle until the very last lap. I am obviously happy for Vitaly who had another strong weekend.”
Petrov’s teammate Nick Heidfeld suffered an accident during the Montreal Grand Prix. Due to that, he could not finish his race for the team. Heidfeld’s retirement from the race due to his crash with Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi really disappointed the Renault
team, as they were expecting a podium position from him.
Boullier discussed the upcoming European Grand Prix and said, “It is beneficial for the sport to have these street circuits, as it provides a contrast from some of the purpose built tracks. The track will suit us well and we expect to be fighting for places
on the front three rows come Sunday’s starting grid.”
Renault team principal informed the media that they have made several tweaks in their R31 car for better results in the Valencia GP. He added that they want to improve their qualifying sessions in the remainder of 2011 Formula 1 season.
After a successful race weekend in Montreal recently, Renault are looking forward to a podium finish in the Valencia GP, scheduled to be held on June 26, 2011 in Europe.
