Eric Chavez continues to represent the New York Yankees on field as Alex Rodriguez catches flu
The New York Yankees suffered another defeat at the hands of the Boston Red Sox on Sunday as Josh Beckett pitched eight shutout innings in a head to head against Carsten Charles Sabathia. While the visiting Bronx Bombers kneeled out of the series with a
defeat, their batting order was revived with veteran and hitting prowess, Eric Chavez, who started on third base this time around.
The 33-year-old was called at Fenway Park by Manager, Joe Girardi to replace Alex Rodriguez, who has been stricken with flu. The hard hitter had previously taken his place on the designated hitter’s position on Saturday against the Red Sox. While he went
3-for-5 against Clay Buchholz that day, Chavez was only able to hit a single to the centre in the third in this encounter.
The player smashed two doubles in a prior game, and is still looking to make an adjustment to the Major League team. Girardi in the last few months has seen a lot of potential from Chavez and while his performance was not something to talk about yesterday,
there is still optimism in the air.
The player said a few words yesterday, which hinted at his mindset for this season.
"I answered that for myself in spring really," Chavez said. "I just felt really good. Some of the balls I hit, I know it's in there. It's just a matter of staying with the same approach."
Girardi will be biting his words now since he elaborated his plans on Chavez yesterday.
"I wouldn't have a problem playing Chavy on a regular basis," Girardi said. "If you had a Tex go down or an Alex go down, or your DH went down, I think Chavy could play pretty regularly. Now, I think I would have to manage him, maybe playing three or four
days in a row. Then you give him a day off."
At the moment, Chavez has an opportunity, which needs to be capitalised before Rodriguez is back on his feet again.
