Eric Chavez lifts the New York Yankees to a series win over the Texas Rangers 6-5 – MLB Update
Eric Chavez put in a brilliant performance as the New York Yankees defeated Texas Rangers 6-5 for a series win at Yankee Stadium, New York on Sunday, April 17.
If there was one thing the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi was worried about, it was the injury to his veteran slugger Alex Rodriguez and the decision to employ the perfect substitution to fill in the place. He brought in Eric Chavez and the decision clicked
as he touched an under-pressure go-ahead single in the eighth inning, leading the Yankees to triumph.
Girardi could not be happier than this as it was evident from his conversation with the reporters after the game. "Couldn't get him out," Girardi said. "He's the type of player that can carry a club."
With stadium filled with spectators, Chavez landed to the plate after Nick Swisher had already driven in a single to steal first base. It also sent Mark Teixeira to second. Having 5-5 on board and chance to grab the advantage, Eric first made a striking
foul and missed another strike. It was the last chance and finally Chavez utilised it driving in a splendid RBI single to centre-field.
"When I made the decision to come here, I knew what it was going to be. Obviously, Alex is going to play a ton of games and when I get in there I've just got to be ready to play," said Chavez, "I'm going to keep the same approach the whole year."
Chavez also earned a win for Rafael Soriano, who remained impressive for his eight shut-out innings. The 31-year-old veteran reliever, who joined the Yankees in January, allowed one hit, made one strike-out and acquired his first win with the club. The hit
turned the game into a pitchers’ side as the closer Mariano Rivera achieved his seventh save in nine innings.
The Rangers’ slugger Adrian Beltre hit a homer in the first inning and then added a double and four runs. However, the Yankees’ hitters washed away his contribution launching three homers. Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and Robinson Cano all touched off
the Rangers’ starter Alexi Ogando.
Posting 27 homers has made the Yankees top home-run getters in this Major League Baseball season. It also led the Yankees to avenge an early rematch of last year’s American League Championship, which Texas won.
