Eric DeCosta gets assistant GM spot as Baltimore Ravens up his role in decision-making-NFL News
Baltimore Ravens’ director of player personnel, Eric DeCosta, who has been a subject of discussions over possession of credentials for the top slot in the management, is finally rewarded with a position, not what some of his mentors might have thought for
him, but an equally befitting one, the post of assistant general manager.
The team confirmed on Friday, May 18, to have promoted DeCosta to the position of assistant GM, next to general manager, Ozzie Newsome.
DeCosta, who has remained a part of Ravens in multiple capacities since 1996, was originally being weighed as the direct heir to Newsome.
Although DeCosta did not get that position straightaway, he is seen moving towards it gradually.
Some analysts have rated the slot of the assistant GM as a right fit for him as this will give him the opportunity to learn tools of the trade before adopting it.
So his promotion will more likely prove to be a turning point of his career at Baltimore. By all standards, he remains to be a winner and not a loser at all.
Most importantly, he has backing from Newsome, who has endorsed the official for the slot of assistant GM from very beginning.
According to Newsome:
"When we extended Eric's contract earlier this year, we changed his title to assistant GM. As Eric continues to grow in the personnel department, he is becoming a vital part of the decision-making process."
The admission of the GM that DeCosta’s role in the decision-making process of the team has grown in importance is clear approval of his credentials for the top slot.
Also, since DeCosta has been a part of the team for a decade and half, he has an inside knowledge of their affairs.
His working into different roles and capacities has added to his competitive professional outlook and his positioning at an influential position is more beneficial for the team than for him.
It is due to his experience and profile that the teams like the Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders had shown interest in him when they had openings for GM posts.
