The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850 international’s future with the Atlas Lions was always under scrutiny and now, he has been relieved of his duties following a disappointing run of results
Eric Gerets is no longer the coach of Moroccan national team. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 coach’s contract.
The defeat at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mozambique-c2962 (2-0) left traces of a riot. At the end of the game, many people showed their anger at Gerets who they felt, had not done enough to get the best out of a team that is currently boasting some of the best players in Africa
at the moment.
Indeed, with the likes of Belhanda, Hadji, Assaidi, Taraabt and so many others, many people felt that the golden age of Moroccan football had finally turned up. However, all the promise has so far, remained just a promise.
Following a poor showing at the African Cup of Nations earlier this year, the Atlas Lions have made a woeful start to the qualification campaign of the same tournament. Apart from a few sympathisers, many former players had raised the question on the credibility
of the Belgian.
Regrauil Walid, who is considered one of the finest Moroccan players of all times, felt sorry for Gerets.
“I was sad for him after the CAN because he is a very good coach. I was the first one to defend him, but there, knowing the Moroccan people, it will be hard for him to stay. This defeat is perhaps one of the worst in our history, as we never had such a group
with Assaidi, Boussoufa, El-Arabi, Belhanda, Taraabt, El-Hamdaoui.”
And, the former Grenoble player was not alone in wishing that Gerets left the national team. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 during his time, did the same a few days later.
“I have always said that my greatest fear for the Moroccan team was the presence of Gerets. Club coach and national coach are two different professions. With all due respect I have for him, I think it is time for him to go. He must leave the team now.”
And on Saturday night, the Federation Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), confirmed the termination of Geret’s contract as Moroccan manager after two seasons in charge of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Atlas-c38538 Lion.
