Many people expected Eric Gerets to replace Didier Deschamps as the coach of Olympique de Marseille. The Belgian has often spoken of his desire to return to the Stade Velodrome where he was the coach for a few years.
Though he left under controversial circumstances and without actually winning anything, the Belgian is still widely admired by the people of Marseille. However, it now appears that Gerets will not be returning to Marseille any time soon and for good reason.
Gerets is set to be announced as the new manager of the Belgian national side. According to Belgian media Sudpresse, Gerets is set to replace Georges Leekens at the helm who left his position a couple of days back.
Currently, Gerets is the manager of the Moroccan national team and has a contract with the Lions of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Atlas-c38538 until 2014. However, the 57-year-old’s position at the team is under a lot of scrutiny especially after Morocco’s woeful showing at the recent African
Cup of Nations.
A few days back, Gerets also spoke about his future at the Belgian national side. The former AC Milan player admitted that it would be an honour for him to one day, manage Belgium.
“I have a contract with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Morocco-c2961 until the 2014 World Cup. So now, it’s impossible. But you never know, I am a Belgian, and therefore certainly not indifferent to the fate of our team.”
With a golden generation made up by the likes of Steven Defour, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850 were unable to secure qualification to the Euros this summer. However, with Gerets at the helm, Belgian might have a better
chance of playing in a major tournament.
Next season, the qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 starts and Gerets will have a huge task on his hands to guide a promising generation of Belgian players to qualify for the mega event.
