Reports in French media claim that Olympique de Marseille are keeping tabs on former coach, Eric Gerets as a potential replacement for Didier Deschamps who is reportedly looking to end his time at the Velodrome
Things are certainly taking a turn for the worst for Ligue 1 giants http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127. Lying in 8th place in the Ligue 1 standings, the Rhone giants face the prospect of life without participation in the UEFA Champions League next season
which could prove devastating for their future.
Furthermore, coach Didier Deschamps is also reportedly keen on ending his time at the club. Deschamps has been at the helm for over three years but has now grown tired of the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future.
During his time at the dugout, Deschamps has led Les Phoceens to one Ligue 1 title, two Trophee des Champions and two Coupe de la Ligue. However, with the club’s finances running dry and no signs of the situation to improve, Deschamps has been forced to
consider his position at the club.
Though Deschamps does not want to leave, if things do not improve, the French tactician would certainly look at other options available to him.
In a bid to find a replacement for Deschamps if he chooses to leave, Marseille are reportedly keeping tabs on former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850 international Eric Gerets. The 57-year-old is currently the manager of the Moroccan national team.
Gerets failed to guide http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Atlas-c38538 Lions in the future and may drop the
hammer any time.
Gerets has also indicated that he would love to return to Marseille one day.
“In http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899, if I ever return, it will be only to OM. I wanted to stay; I intended to do if there had been no certain statements in the press (the leaders of OM had asked for a Championelle by the end of the 2009 season). That put undeserved pressure on him.”
Ready to let go of the past, Gerets is certainly a good candidate for replacing Deschamps.
