Eric Prodon edges past Thomas Schoorel to reach the quarterfinal – Pekao Szczecin Open 2011
Fourth seeded French Eric Prodon trashed Netherlands’ Thomas Schoorel in straight sets at the Pekao Szczecin Open 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event held annually at the Wojska Polskiego in Szczecin, Poland. He registered a 6-2,
7-5 victory over the 22-year-old Dutchman to secure a last four spot on Wednesday.
Ranked 108th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Prodon put up a solid display of his skills and abilities to dump the Dutchman, ranked eighteen spots below him, in one and half hour on their first
meeting. He has now confidently advanced into the final four of this Polish tournament.
After Schoorel held his serve in the opening game, 30-year-old French star unleashed exquisite forehands from his arsenal of skills to reel off next five games in a row before the Dutchman could hold on again. Prodon then held
again in the eighth game to seal the opener with a 6-2 score line.
He clobbered a higher first serve share of 66 percent as compared to Schoorel 57 percent and registered an impressive 64 percent win on it. Furthermore, the Frenchman saved all four breakpoints faced through his amazing defensive
skills and capitalised on two out of six breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win easily.
Prodon lost his way in the final set and gifted an early break of serve to trail 1-2. However, he quickly roared back and snatched his break in the very next game. Later, the Frenchman held hi remaining serves and broke Schoorel’s
serve again in the eleventh game to clinch the set with a 7-5 win.
The Paris native produced a slightly lower first serve share this time around but registered a magnificent 74 percent win on it. Despite failing to save the only breakpoint faced, he converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities
to his advantage.
Next up for the 5’10” Frenchman is the Argentinean Federico Delbonis who stunned fifth seeded Kazakh Andrey Golubev in straight sets to reach this spot.
World number 180, Delbonis took one hour and thirty-eight minutes to upset world number 103, Golubev with a 7-6(2), 6-4 score line earlier that day. He fended off four out of five breakpoints faced and capitalised on two out of
three breakpoint chances to his advantage to help clinch comfortably. 20-year-old also clobbered a higher first serve share of 64 percent as opposed to Kazakh’s 58 percent and earned a tremendous 78 percent win on it.
