Eric Prodon triumphs over Marcin Gawron to advance into second round – Poznan Porsche Open 2011 CH
Fourth seeded French Eric Prodon hit back at a local wild card enterer Marcin Gawron with a bang at the Poznan Porsche Open 2011, a clay court tournament held in Poland. He registered a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over the 23-year-old
local hero to advance into the second round on Tuesday.
30-year-old Frenchman displayed exceptional skills to down the Pole in a three set thriller on their first meeting. He was a set down but made an epic comeback by unleashing his true colours to earn a bagel and a breadstick in
the following two sets. Prodon eventually sealed the deal in one hour and seventeen minutes and booked a second round place in this ATP Challenger Tour event.
Ranked 268th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Gawron thundered into the opening set and got the desiderated break in the very first game to take the lead. He then held on to his entire serves amazingly
and broke the Frenchman’s serve again in the fifth game to clinch the opener with a 6-2 score line. The Pole clobbered a higher first serve share and registered an impressive 67 percent win on it. Furthermore, he saved the only breakpoint faced and converted
both breakpoint chances to his advantage.
World number 86, Prodon on the other hand went into savage mode in the second set. He unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off first four games in a row before Gawron broke back. The Frenchman broke the local star’s serve
again in the proceeding game and bagged a breadstick by keeping his serve in the last game.
The Paris native perfected his winning ways in the final set as he produced a higher first serve share of 57 percent as compared to Gawron’s 43 percent and registered a perfect win on it. He faced zero breakpoint and capitalised
on three out of four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to wipe out all six games consecutively.
Next challenge for Prodon is his compatriot Augustin Gensse who dumped Argentinean Juan Pablo Brzezicki in straight sets to set-up this clash.
27-year-old Gensse put up a solid display of his abilities in the opening set as he kept his entire serves by his angled shots. He broke the Argentinean’s serve once to pocket the opener with a 6-4 win.
The Frenchman remained his winning ways in the final set and after exchanging breaks twice, he capitalised on his third breakpoint opportunity in the end to seal the set by winning seven games to five.
