Eric Schildge wins final stage as Juan Suarez takes lead in Tour Do Rio 2011 - Cycling News
Jamis-Sutter Home Pro Cycling team’s Eric Schilgde won the fifth and final stage of Tour do Rio 2011 on Sunday, July 31. Juan Suarez takes the overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Rio Das Ostras and ended in Rio de Janeiro. Schildge took the total of 3 hours, 49 minutes and 23 seconds to cover the distance of 183.9 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Schildge told the media, "There's something about it now in my brain, to be a breakaway guy, so when that break went, I just hit it. Oh my god were we going fast! In that first 15-20 km we were going about 55 km/h on the flat and
I had to tell the guys to slow down a bit."
Breno Sidoti of Funvic-Pindamonhangaba was runner-up and Mirko Tedeschi of Petroli Firenze-Cycling finished third with the same timing of Sprinter.
The group of three cyclists made their first breakaway after a few kilometres including, Breno Sidoti (Funvic-Pindamonhangaba), Walter Ribeiro Jr (Padaria Real-Caloi-Ceu Azul-Alimentos) and Magno Nazaret (Funvic-Pindamonhangaba).
Breno Sidoti increased his pace and managed to gain the first sprint while a few kilometres to go, Nazaret and Walter Ribeiro worked together to catch the leading rider and launched an attack and Nazaret took the next three sprint of the stage without any
difficulty.
However, in the final kilometres the five cyclists managed to gain a lead but Schildge was in good form and with the help of his team he took the victory. The four cyclists crossed the finish line with the same timing of Schildge while Walter was in fourth
place with difference of 4 seconds.
Juan Suarez took the overall standing with the timing of 18 hours, 42 minutes and 24 seconds.
Suarez said, “Congratulations to the Brazilians, they worked really hard this week and pushed us all the way."
Jaime Castaneda was runner-up with 27 second and Edward Beltran finished third with 37 seconds behind Suarez. The stage winner, Schildge was in 42nd place with a difference of 30 minutes and 16 seconds.
