Eric Shanteau and Chad La Tourette dominate Men’s final events - 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge
Eric Shanteau and Chad La Tourette secured gold medals in the finals of the Men’s swimming events on day three of the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge, held at the William Woollett Aquatic Center, on May 29.
The session ended after the finals of the 200m breast-stroke, 1500m freestyle, 100m back-stroke and the 200m butterfly in the Men’s category.
The session initiated with the 200m breast-stroke final, where UN-ST’s Eric Shanteau conquered the gold medal by completing his swim in a time of 2:11.71 minutes. Shanteau, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals, improved his timing by almost
three seconds to pocket the gold medal. He was almost four seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Andrew Bree of Trojan-CA, who touched the wall for the silver medal in 2:15.46 minutes. They were followed by Sean Mahoney, who sustained his third fastest spot
by winning the bronze medal in a time of 2:16.70 minutes.
Next was the 1500m freestyle, where 22-year-old Chad La Tourette dominated the distant freestyle event, by clocking a time of 15:14.52 minutes. La Tourette had a significant lead of almost 34 seconds over his strongest competitor, Ricardo Monasterio, who
occupied the silver medal, posting 15:48.29 minutes. Michael Zoldos of UN-PC stayed only four seconds away from Monasterio and stepped on the podium for the bronze medal, with a timing of 15:52.52 minutes.
After few minutes, Daniel Bell earned the arena’s respect by sustaining his fastest qualification spot in the 100m back-stroke. Bell touched the wall for the gold medal in a winning time of 55.34 seconds. He finished his swim almost one second earlier than
his competitor, Guy Barnea, who materialised as the silver medallist, clocking a time of 56.48 seconds. Matt Thompson of UN-CA, who qualified as the fourth fastest swimmer, appeared on the podium for the bronze medal, by producing a time of 56.49 seconds.
In the 200m butterfly, Corey Okubo secured the gold medal by clocking a time of 2:03.33 minutes. Okubo stunned the arena by overwhelming the fastest qualifying swimmer, Zane Grothe, who failed to sustain his qualifying time of 2:03.29 minutes and finished
his swim for the silver medal in 2:03.96 minutes. Grothe was 0.58 seconds away from the third finisher, Young Tae Seo, who touched the wall for the bronze medal in 2:04.54 minutes, respectively.
The session concluded after the last event and the arena applauded the contestants for their breathtaking swims to achieve podium finishes.
