Eric Shanteau and Michael Phelps dominate Men’s events – 2011 North Carolina Charlotte Ultra Swim
Eric Shanteau of Unattached-ST and Michael Phelps of North Baltimore displayed impressive swims in the Men’s swimming events on the fourth day of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim.
The session concluded with the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), 200m backstroke and the 100m freestyle on May 15, 2011.
The first event of the session was 200m IM, where Eric Shanteau conquered the fastest qualification spot by touching the wall first in a time of 2:01.56 minutes. He was followed by Club Wolverine-M’s Peng WU and the Trojan Swim Club’s Markus Rogan, who entered
the final as the second and third fastest swimmers, posting times of 2:03.15 and 2:04.68 minutes respectively. Poseidon-VA’s William Harris and Una GSC-FL’s Conor Dwyer followed them into the final as the fourth and fifth fastest swimmers, clocking times of
2:05.32 and 2:05.42 minutes respectively.
The next event of the session was the 200m backstroke, where the 2008 Beijing Olympics champion, Michael Phelps qualified as the fastest swimmer into the final, clocking a time of 2:00.47 minutes.
Phelps, who demonstrated some inferior swims at the Austin Grand Prix and the Michigan Grand Prix, earned the crowd’s respect by managing the top spot of the 200m event. Alex Lendrum of the Una TROJ-CA and Matt Hawes of Swim Ontario gained the second and
third fastest spot into the finals, posting times of 2:01.08 and 2:01.36 minutes respectively.
Hawes’ team member, Tobias Oriwol remained only 0.40 seconds slower than him and qualified as the fourth fastest swimmer with a timing of 2:01.76 minutes. Eric Ress of Indiana University-IN was only 0.23 seconds slower from Oriwol and touched the wall for
fifth fastest qualification in 2:01.99 minutes.
After that, the arena witnessed a gruelling effort from New South-NC’s Scott Robinson in the 100m freestyle. Robinson transpired as the fastest swimmer into the final by clocking a time of 49.90 seconds.
Unattached-ST’s Richard Berens and Tucson Ford Dealers Matthew Grevers touched the wall for second and third fastest qualifications, posting 50.26 and 50.72 seconds respectively. Grevers was only 0.02 seconds faster than his following swimmer, Davis Tarwater,
who occupied the fourth fastest spot by posting a time of 50.74 seconds. Similarly, Tarwater managed to outperform his following competitor, Nick Brunelli, who appeared on the finishing wall in a time of 50.75 seconds.
The finals of the same events will be conducted in the second session, where these swimmers will battle each other to attain a podium finish.
In addition, the championship will conclude after the finals of these events and the winners will earn awards and accolades.
