Eric Shanteau and Michael Phelps win gold medals: 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim
Eric Shanteau and Michael Phelps clinched gold medals in their respective events on last day of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Centre.
Both of these American swimmers posted times comfortably under the World Championships A-Time Qualification Standards and confirmed their spots in the USA Swimming Team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai this July.
The session included the finals of Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), 200m back-stroke, 1500m freestyle and the 100m freestyle.
The session started with the 200m IM final, where the Unattached-ST’s Eric Shanteau displayed a miraculous swim in front of the arena to capture the title of the event. Shanteau touched the wall in a time of 1:59.82 minutes for the gold medal and was the
only swimmer to post a sub 2:00.00 minutes effort. He was followed by Markus Rogan of Trojan Swim Club, who claimed the silver medal in a time of 2:00.20 minutes.
Peng Wu of Club Wolverine-M, who qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the final, failed to meet the expectations of his fans and finished third with a timing of 2:01.19 minutes.
In the 200m back-stroke, Michael Phelps of North Baltimore demonstrated an unmatchable swim of 1:57.20 minutes for the gold medal. Daytona Beach-FL’s Ryan Lochte and Indiana University-IN’s Eric Ress followed him on the podium for the silver and bronze medal,
posting a time of 1:58.82 minutes.
Moments later, Ricky Berens of Unattached-ST pocketed the gold medal for the 100m freestyle by clocking a time 49.46 seconds. Scott Robison of New South-NC followed him on the podium for the silver medal, touching home in a time of 49.90 seconds. They were
followed by Swim MAC Carolina’s Davis Tarwater, who climbed the podium for the bronze medal with a timing of 50.19 seconds.
The last event of the session was Men’s 1500m freestyle final, where Badger Swim Club’s Ryan Feeley posted a time of 15:27.04 minutes to earn the gold medal. Feeley was followed by Scenic City Aqua’s Sean Ryan and Mission Viejo-CA’s Joseph Arnold, who appeared
on the podium for the silver and bronze medals by posting a time of 15:32.87 and 15:34.77 minutes, respectively.
The championship concluded after its last event whereas the 2010-2011 USA Grand Prix Series will have its last stop at the Santa Clara during June 2011. The last stop of the Grand Prix is of huge importance, as it precedes the 2011 World Championships. The
world’s elite swimmers will participate to warm themselves up for the world titles.
