Erik Bedard’s pitching helps Seattle Mariners defeat San Diego Padres 4-1 – MLB Update
Erik Bedard subdued the San Diego Padres’ hitters as the Seattle Mariners took a 4-1 victory at Petco Park, San Diego on Friday, May 21.
Bedard gave up three singles and struck-out nine in the eight innings that he pitched to pave the way of a victory for his team. With this exceptionally good performance, he has now brought further improvement in his stats with a 1.79 ERA in the 16 career
interleague starts. Importantly, he dominates the Padres 4-0 and having 31 strike-outs with a 1.63 ERA. All the same, as a whole, he has now persisted for seven innings in his last 7 consecutive games.
"We're trying to keep him strong," Wedge said. "It was kind of funky coming back after the last start, which was really only 17 pitches, but he still got hot. We're working to keep him in a good place."
The Mariners’ offence sparked as well on Friday. "The guys have been doing a great job," manager Eric Wedge said. "They've got a consistent mindset when they go out there and start the game. It's their job to give us a chance to win ballgames, and they're
doing it immensely."
Carlos Peguero took Mat Latos of San Diego to task and scored the first single for Seattle in the second inning after the scoreless first inning of the Padres. Brendan Ryan doubled the lead for Seattle by singling to right allowing Carlos Peguero to score.
Bedard then played his part for the Mariners’ defence, as he limited the Padres’ hitters successfully and kept the 2-0 lead intact. Ryan, on the other hand, hit a sacrifice fly to centre to triple the lead, thereby making things increasingly difficult for
the Padres.
While Mat Latos had difficulty containing the Seattle offence, Bedard sounded invulnerable as Latos gave up two hits in the sixth inning. This allowed Miguel Olivo to score the fourth run for Seattle, effectively bringing the team in the winning position.
Bedard pitched up until the eighth inning to not only prove his brilliance as a left-handed starting pitcher, but also maintain the lead. Literally no Padres’ hitter was able to play him. Chris Ray replaced him to come and pitch, as the Padres had a plan
to change things in their favour.
That, however, did not happen. Ray allowed only one hit and a run to Ryan Ludwick to win the game comfortably 4-1.
