Erik Condra set to play in NHL, signs one-way, two-year, $1.25 million contract with Ottawa Senators
Having only played 26 games with Ottawa Senators last season, Erik Condra is set to play a full National Hockey League (NHL) season now as the young right winger signed a one-way, two-year contract with Ottawa on Wednesday, worth an estimated $1.25 million.
Condra, a 211st overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in round-seven by Ottawa Senators, continued to play with his university team of the University of Notre Dame, in the Central Collegiate Hockey League (CCHA).
Later Condra shifted to Senators' affiliate team, Binghamton Senators, in the American Hockey League (AHL).
It was a wild ride for Condra, in his second season with Binghamton Senators, he helped lead the minor Senators to a Calder Cup championship after beating Houston Aeros in the Calder Cup Finals.
Condra registered 47 points, 17 goals and 30 assists, in 55 regular season games with Binghamton and scored 17 points, 5 goals and 12 assists, in 23 playoff games.
In 26 games, Condra played for Ottawa and scored 11 points with 6 goals and 5 assists.
“I’m excited, it’s nice to have it out of the way and focus on training and getting ready for the main camp”, Condra said in a conference call from Rhode Island on Wednesday. “I think it’s a good fit. I think last year, at the end of the year when I came
up, I proved I could play there and make an impact”.
Winning his first championship was what proved to the major league team that Condra is truly ready to make it big in the NHL.
His consistency proved his maturity level over the season and inclined Ottawa towards signing him.
According to the 24-year-old from Trenton, Missouri, United States, he is ready to take the next step.
“We can take that and have confidence that we’ve done it before, that we can do it again — hopefully at the next level”, Condra said.
Getting married next fall will be certainly much more meaningful for Condra and his fiancé since his long-time dream came true after immense hard work and determination to the game of ice hockey.
It will be exciting to see how Condra plays in Ottawa Senators' line-up when the next season starts in October.
