Erik Flores takes a commanding lead at the News Sentinel Open
Erik Flores is in sole position to claim his first ever Web.com Tour victory after opening up with a two-shot lead on the second day of the News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot, on Friday, August 24, 2012.
Flores was impressive with his ball striking and hit 11 fairways off the tee. According to him, one can play aggressively, once they are on the fairways.
His opponents also witnessed him do the same thing, as he attacked the pins whenever he saw any chance.
At the end of the round, he had six birdies posted on his scorecard without any bogeys. At the end of the second round, he had an overall score of 11-under par 131.
Mathias Gronberg, Hudson Swafford and Darron Stiles tied for the second position at a nine-under par 133.
Further a stroke back was a pack of seven players tied for the fifth position. The overnight leader Casey Wittenberg faltered for a one-over par 72 and settled for the share of the 12th position.
Last week, Flores missed the cut at the Midwest Classic. Usually, players hate missing the cut and tag them as bad patches of their careers.
However, Flores took it in a different way. According to him, missing the cut gave him extra two days off prior to coming to Knoxville, which helped him spend some time on his short game too.
"Missing the cut last week was really good from the standpoint that it allowed me to take a couple of days off," Flores said.
"And I just know it's going to click, the ball striking and the putting have not come on at the same time. Those aspects of my game are strong; it's just that when they are going together they are a lot better".
He also stated that despite the long travelling hours and tiring schedule, he loves to move to different parts of the world and play against the best players on the tour.
"I have dreamed of playing with these guys and I have gotten a lot more comfortable as the year goes on," Flores said with a smile. "And it's been fun beating them this week".
