Erik Morales fails drug test – Boxing News
Mexican legend Erik Morales has allegedly failed a drug test, as suggested by numerous reports. Morales, who is scheduled to face WBC light welterweight titlist Danny Garcia this Saturday, was tested positive for a banned substance. However, reports of the
substance have not been disclosed yet.
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed the news to si.com, adding that there were multiple irregularities with Morales ‘A Sample’. Schaefer has confirmed that the fight between Morales and Garcia is still on.
“Morales is a legendary fighter,” said Schaefer to Si.com. “And really, nobody deserves a rush to judgement. You are innocent until proven guilty.”
Since the fight is too close, chances are that it will not be stopped, instead both fighters will go for a post-fight drug test. If Morales wins over Garcia and he is found positive after the fight, he might be in trouble.
The WBC has already taken the matter in consideration, announcing that they have received several calls regarding the same. According to the WBC, since Golden Boy has already clarified the issue and no objection has been relied yet, reliance on independent
publications is of no use. The WBC further stated that neither their commissioner nor the NY Boxing Commission made any drug tests. Therefore, according to the WBC, reports of Morales failing the drug test are too be quashed.
Erik Morales will be fighting Danny Garcia in a rematch. The duo locked horns earlier this year, when Morales lost his WBC title to the unbeaten American. While Morales has not fought since then, Garcia went onto face Briton fighter Amir Khan in a title
unification bout. Garcia stopped Khan via knockout in the fourth round, claiming the Bolton proud’s WBA light welterweight title.
Morales clarified the issue while talking to the media saying, “Wednesday I did all the necessary tests to get a license in New York and I had no problems. I’ve had a very long career in boxing (28 years). I’m clean and I’m fine. It’s a baseless rumor.”
For now, the fight is still on until there is a mandatory drug test ordered by the WBC or the NY Boxing Commission.
